The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on March 10 that construction has resumed on U.S. 395 in Hermiston as part of ongoing efforts to upgrade curb ramps in eastern Oregon. Crews began work at Theater Lane and are moving south, with the project scheduled for completion in summer 2026.
The upgrades are part of a larger statewide initiative to bring curb ramps up to current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The improvements aim to increase safety and provide better access for people who walk, bike, or use mobility devices.
During construction, sidewalk, lane, and shoulder closures are expected. Flaggers and signs will direct traffic, but businesses will remain open and pedestrian access through or around work zones will be maintained. Work is taking place during daytime hours from Monday through Thursday.
According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, benefits include upgrades to existing curb ramps and pedestrian signals as well as installation of new ADA-compliant curb ramps and signals where none currently exist. More information about the statewide effort can be found on the ODOT ADA webpage.
In addition to the construction updates, ODOT has released its draft 2027–2030 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for public review and comment. The STIP outlines how state and federal funds will be allocated for projects such as public transportation improvements, new bike paths and sidewalks, road repaving, bridge maintenance, and safety upgrades. Community members can explore proposed projects online through March 20 and submit feedback by March 31 via the online open house or email.
Vicki Moles, Community Affairs Specialist at ODOT, is available for questions or comments regarding the project. Additional information about other projects in eastern Oregon is available on the Region 5 Eastern Oregon project webpage.
