The City of Rogue River announced on Apr. 20 that it will conduct a smoke testing survey of the city’s wastewater collection and storm drain systems. The activities are tentatively scheduled to take place between Tuesday, May 5, and Friday, May 15, 2026.
Smoke testing is used to identify leaks in the system and detect locations where unwanted storm water may be entering the sanitary sewer. During this process, survey personnel observe where smoke escapes above ground through holes in the system.
Residents may see smoke coming from roof vents, clean outs, or manhole lids during the test period. According to city officials, this is normal and expected. However, if plumbing issues exist—such as faulty or improperly installed P-traps or drains—smoke may enter buildings. To help prevent this from happening, residents are advised to pour water into all drains before testing begins.
The city said that the smoke used in these tests is non-toxic, non-staining, and non-flammable. If any smoke enters a structure during testing, residents should notify City Hall or contact members of the survey crew immediately.
Officials warn that if smoke appears inside a home or property during testing it could indicate that dangerous gases are entering from the sanitary sewer system. Residents who notice any such occurrence are urged to report it right away by speaking with onsite personnel or calling City Hall at (541) 582-4401.
