A woman from Dayton, Oregon, was sentenced to federal prison for defrauding the Department of Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Cheryl Elizabeth Campos, 62, received a sentence of 25 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

Court documents state that between January 2022 and June 2024, Campos misused her role as Quartermaster at the VFW to access organizational bank accounts. She transferred more than $1.7 million into her personal accounts. To hide these actions, she falsified financial records, including bank statements and accounting documents.

The investigation found that Campos spent the embezzled funds on hundreds of crystals, semi-precious rocks, marbles, stones, statues, credit card payments, and a vehicle for a family member.

Campos was charged with wire fraud on March 24, 2025. She pleaded guilty to the charge on April 15, 2025.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. Robert S. Trisotto, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, prosecuted the case.
