Northbound traffic on Interstate 5 at the Aurora-Donald interchange is now using the center section of a new bridge, following a weekend shift by construction crews. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced that Ehlen Road NE will be closed to all traffic under I-5 starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27. This closure allows for the demolition of the old northbound I-5 bridge.

ODOT plans to reopen Ehlen Road NE by 8 a.m. on Friday, August 29, as work continues on the new bridge structure.

“Thanks for your patience – northbound I-5 traffic is now using the center part of the new bridge!” ODOT stated in its announcement.

The department advises drivers to slow down and exercise caution in the work zone, noting that construction equipment will be moving in and out of the area and may use the far left lane. Drivers are encouraged to avoid this lane while passing through.

Additional impacts include daily work from Sunday through Thursday with some night and weekend activity. Up to two lanes may close nightly in either direction on I-5 between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., and other roads in the project area could see single-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Speed limits have been reduced to 55 mph within the work zone, and there will be construction noise and possible delays. Lane changes are not permitted where double white lines are present.

ODOT reminds motorists: “Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work. Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.”

Fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present.

While ODOT faces ongoing funding challenges affecting maintenance and operations, most projects like this one continue because they rely on separate state or federal funds restricted by law for project development purposes only.
