A moratorium on elm tree pruning will take effect on April 15 and continue through October 15, as announced by local authorities. The restriction is intended to help prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).
The pruning ban aims to protect elm trees from further infection during the period when the disease is most likely to spread. Residents are advised not to prune elm trees during these months and are encouraged to follow proper wood disposal procedures.
Community members who notice potentially affected elm trees are asked to report them. Reports can be made by email or by calling 503-823-TREE (8733) and selecting option #3.
Dutch Elm Disease has posed a threat to local elms for several years, making preventative measures such as this moratorium important for maintaining the health of urban forests.
Authorities remind residents that cooperation with these guidelines will support ongoing efforts to manage DED in the community.
