Ford CEO Jim Farley announced on Apr. 14 that the company plans to launch an all-electric, affordable vehicle in 2027. The announcement was made during a conversation on Spike’s Car Radio’s YouTube channel.
The news is significant for consumers interested in electric vehicles, as Ford aims to compete with established models like Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3. “We’ll have an all-electric affordable vehicle to compete with Model Y and Model 3,” Farley said. “I think there’s nothing else like it on the market for these new vehicles coming out from Ford.”
Farley explained that a specialized team, which includes former Tesla and Formula 1 employees, has been working on the project for four years under strict confidentiality measures. He noted that even his own badge did not grant him access to their workspace.
While details remain limited, there is uncertainty about whether Ford will introduce one or two distinct vehicles as part of this initiative. Autoblog pointed out that the Mustang Mach-E already competes with the Model Y but suggested that these upcoming offerings will feature significantly different designs and could be built on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle platform, starting with a midsize truck.
The company is expanding its range of budget-friendly options by including several vehicles priced under $40,000. This move aligns with broader trends in the automotive industry toward more accessible electric cars.
As more drivers consider switching to electric vehicles, studies indicate EVs offer environmental benefits over their lifespans compared to gas-powered cars due to reduced tailpipe emissions and lower maintenance needs. Looking ahead, Ford’s efforts may help make electric transportation more accessible and appealing for a wider range of consumers.
