Friends of Trees – Eugene Metro is marking Earth Day with a series of activities throughout April, including Friday tree walks scheduled for April 24 and May 8. Director Erik Burke said on Apr. 17 that the nonprofit will also participate in the Earth Day event at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion on Sunday, April 19.
Earth Day celebrations are being extended by many organizations this year, allowing more community members to take part in environmental activities beyond just one day. Friends of Trees aims to involve people in both educational and hands-on opportunities related to trees and their care.
Burke said that while tree planting typically slows down at the end of April, there are still important steps for maintaining young trees as summer approaches. “This year has been a dry year, and we were thinking it was gonna really dry out early,” Burke told KLCC. “But thankfully, we’ve received a couple soaking rains recently, meaning we probably won’t have to start that watering soon.” He added that young trees need three to five years of summer watering to become established.
In addition to public events, Friends of Trees will be working directly with students at Malabon Elementary School and visiting Kalapuya High School for tree planting activities in the coming days. Starting in May, volunteers will help with ongoing maintenance through a tree inspection program where all previously planted trees are checked and cared for.
Burke emphasized the importance of community involvement as seasonal conditions change: beginning next month, he encourages people to clear weeds from around their trees’ bases, apply mulch if needed, and monitor soil moisture levels.
