A Gervais resident, Jairin Anzaldua-Ervin, 29, appeared in federal court after being charged with felony assault of a federal law enforcement officer. The incident occurred near the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in South Portland.
Court documents state that on October 4, 2025, Anzaldua-Ervin was among a group trespassing on the driveway of the ICE building. Law enforcement officers reportedly gave several warnings for the group to leave the area. According to authorities, Anzaldua-Ervin responded by throwing a water bottle at an officer, striking them in the chest. He was then arrested.
“Throwing water bottles, or any object for that matter, at federal law enforcement officers is not protesting – it’s a crime – and perpetrators will be arrested and federally prosecuted,” said Scott E. Bradford, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. “I thank the brave members of federal law enforcement who have protected federal employees and the ICE building for more than 110 consecutive nights.”
Since June 13, 2025, prosecutors have filed charges against 30 individuals related to incidents at the ICE facility in South Portland. These charges include assaulting federal officers as well as other offenses such as failure to comply and damage to government property.
Anzaldua-Ervin has been released under conditions while awaiting further court proceedings. If convicted of felony assault on a federal officer, he faces up to eight years in prison.
Authorities remind that a criminal complaint is only an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
