The Abernethy Bridge on Interstate 205 in Oregon City will be closed overnight on Friday, December 5, and Saturday, December 6, for the installation of a sign bridge as part of the ongoing Abernethy Bridge Project. The closure will affect both directions of I-205 over the bridge from 11 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, and again from 11 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday.
There will also be lane closures before and after each full closure. Drivers are advised to allow extra time if they plan to use I-205 during this period.
In addition to the main bridge closure, certain on-ramps will also be closed overnight:
– OR 99E on-ramp to I-205 southbound
– OR 43 on-ramp to I-205 northbound
Regional traffic can bypass this section of I-205 by using alternate routes including OR 224, OR 99E, and I-5. Local drivers needing to cross the river may use the Arch Bridge.
According to project officials, two more overnight closures of the Abernethy Bridge are expected in coming weeks for completion of sign bridge installation. Further details about these closures will be announced when confirmed.
Work is also scheduled on the Arch Bridge starting Monday, December 1. This work requires closing one westbound lane during daytime hours, preventing travel from Oregon City to West Linn via the Arch Bridge while work is underway. The eastbound lane remains open for travel from West Linn to Oregon City; however, because only one lane is available in each direction, westbound drivers must follow detour signs back toward the Abernethy Bridge.
Officials estimate that up to ten more days of daytime lane closures may be needed for work on the Arch Bridge.
“We expect to need two more overnight closures on the Abernethy Bridge in the coming weeks to complete the sign bridge installation. We will share details when they are confirmed.”
