Interstate 5 will be closed in both directions for six hours on four nights in November to allow for the installation of new RealTime signs. The closures will take place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on November 4, 6, 10, and 13. The affected stretch runs from the Ross Island Bridge to SW Terwilliger Boulevard, south of downtown Portland.

During these nights, several on-ramps will also be closed. Northbound closures include Terwilliger Boulevard, Multnomah Boulevard, Spring Garden Street, and Huber Street. Southbound closures affect the ramp from Interstate 405 south to I-5 south, as well as Harbor Drive and Hood Avenue.

Detour routes will be in place for both neighborhood and regional traffic. Local drivers can use Barbur Boulevard, while regional traffic is advised to bypass the area using Interstate 205 to Interstate 84 or U.S. 26 to OR 217.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and exercise caution during the closures. Lane closures may also occur before and after the full nighttime closures as crews set up and clean up the work site. The schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen events.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, “We are improving our RealTime system to make roads safer and help Oregonians get where they are going more efficiently by providing real-time traffic information to drivers.”

The project involves installing RealTime Variable Advisory Speed signs along this busy stretch of I-5. Completion is expected in late 2025. More information about the RealTime signs can be found on the project website.
