Construction work on the Battle Creek Road Bridge, part of the Interstate 5 widening project in south Salem, will lead to several nighttime closures of I-5 in early January. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced that large cranes will be brought in to set bridge beams, requiring lane and full highway closures.

On January 8, the right lane of both northbound and southbound I-5 near milepost 250 at Battle Creek Road will close from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. on January 9. Only one lane in each direction will remain open during this period, with crews working overnight and construction noise expected.

From January 12 through January 14, ODOT plans full nighttime closures of both directions of I-5 between Exit 248 and Exit 252. These closures will occur nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., with all traffic detoured onto Commercial Street SE and Kuebler Boulevard. “To keep you and our workers safe, both directions of I-5 will close for three nights,” ODOT stated.

Detours for northbound drivers include exiting to Commercial Street SE, turning right on Kuebler Boulevard, and re-entering northbound I-5. Southbound drivers should take Exit 252 onto Kuebler Boulevard, turn left on Commercial Street SE, and return to southbound I-5.

The schedule is subject to change depending on weather or construction needs. ODOT advises travelers to check TripCheck.com for real-time updates about traffic conditions and closure information.

During ongoing work in the area, motorists can expect daytime and nighttime crews present along with potential lane, shoulder, or ramp closures as needed. A reduced speed limit of 55 mph remains in effect throughout the work zone.

The agency urges drivers to exercise caution: “Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work. Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.” Fines are doubled in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present.

Pedestrian access through or around work zones will remain available for those with disabilities as required by law.
