Interstate 5 in southwest Portland is set to close overnight in both directions on several nights in November as part of an effort to install new RealTime variable advisory speed signs. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced that these closures, originally planned to begin on November 4, will now start the night of November 6.
The affected stretch runs from the south Interstate 405 interchange to SW Terwilliger Boulevard. Closures will take place from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. on November 6-7, November 10-11, and November 13-14. A possible fourth closure may be scheduled if necessary.
On-ramps that will also be closed during these times include Terwilliger Boulevard, Multnomah Boulevard, Spring Garden Street, and Huber Street for northbound traffic; and I-405 south to I-5 south, Harbor Drive, and Hood Avenue for southbound traffic.
Detour signage will direct neighborhood drivers to Barbur Boulevard while regional drivers are advised to use Interstate 205 to Interstate 84 or U.S. 26 to OR 217 as alternate routes. Travelers should expect delays and exercise caution during the closures and lane restrictions that may occur before and after full closures for work site setup and cleanup.
“ODOT is installing RealTime variable advisory speed signs along this busy stretch of I-5 south of downtown Portland to improve safety and traffic flow by providing drivers with real-time traffic information,” the agency stated.
Officials note that dates could change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. The project aims to make roads safer and help Oregonians travel more efficiently by giving up-to-date information through the new signage system between the Ross Island Bridge and Terwilliger Boulevard. Completion is expected by late 2025.
