All lanes of Interstate 84 near McCord Creek in the Columbia River Gorge have reopened in both directions, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. The reopening follows a period that began in mid-October when one lane in each direction was closed for work related to the McCord Creek Bridge Replacement Project.
During the closure, crews drilled under the bridges, constructed a retaining wall, and prepared the highway for a future traffic crossover configuration planned for spring 2026. The NE Frontage Road on-ramp to eastbound I-84 at the Elowah Falls Trail parking area has also temporarily reopened after surface work on the highway concluded for the 2025 season.
The department stated, “In spring 2026, we will replace the aging eastbound I-84 bridge over McCord Creek to improve the safety and lifespan of the highway. Crews will continue working underneath I-84 by constructing supports beneath the eastbound bridge through the winter. This part of the project will not affect I-84 travelers.”
Work on supports beneath the eastbound bridge will continue during winter but is not expected to impact drivers. The next major phase involving traffic changes is scheduled for spring 2026.
