Crews will be installing sign structures on I-84 the week of July 28, 2025. Travelers between La Grande and Durkee should expect delays of up to 20 minutes due to rolling slowdowns necessary for the installation of variable message signs and structures.

Flaggers will manage traffic at the I-84 on-ramps around construction locations, holding it up to 20 minutes. Two control vehicles will guide traffic through the work zone at 30 MPH. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through as needed. At least two daily slowdowns are expected, with a third scheduled for Monday for structure removal.

The schedule from July 28 to August 1 includes specific mileposts: eastbound near Exit 261 on Monday, westbound near Clover Creek on Tuesday, both directions south of North Powder on Wednesday and Thursday, and westbound near Exit 327 for Durkee on Friday.

This project aims to upgrade road sensors and install variable speed limit and message signs along I-84 between Baker City and La Grande. The signs will provide travelers with important information such as road closures, accidents, delays, conditions, amber alerts, and emergency notifications.

Despite a funding crisis affecting ODOT’s maintenance operations, most construction projects like this one continue as planned due to separate capital programs funded by state or federal funds legally restricted from being used for maintenance. However, reduced workforce availability may cause delays in timelines or introduce challenges in project delivery.
