The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on March 13 that Interstate 84 will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Exit 353 and Exit 356 beginning March 20. The change is part of a major roadway improvement project between Huntington and Ontario.
The lane reduction is expected to cause delays and slower speeds for travelers as westbound traffic will shift to the eastbound lanes, with only one lane open in each direction into the summer. This temporary configuration allows crews to complete paving and other work on the westbound lanes. Construction schedules may change due to weather or other factors, according to the department.
The project involves repaving 16 miles of I-84 in both directions and rebuilding road connections near the Olds Ferry Interchange at Exit 356. Additional improvements include new lights at westbound chain-up areas, new variable message signs, guardrail upgrades, and an upgrade to the weigh-in-motion system at the Farewell Bend Port of Entry. These upgrades are intended to help trucks move through more efficiently, extend the life of the highway, reduce maintenance needs, and improve safety for all travelers.
This is a two-year project with scheduled completion in October 2027. Drivers can expect ongoing single-lane and shoulder closures on I-84 in both directions between Huntington and Ontario during construction. Various ramps along I-84 will also close temporarily as work progresses.
Travelers are advised by officials to slow down in work zones and plan for short delays while construction continues.
