A major landslide has led to the long-term closure of Oregon Route 229 between Kernville and Siletz. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) reports that water remains a significant challenge at the site, affecting both access and safety. Saturated ground conditions have increased the risk of further movement or new slides, making it difficult for crews to work in the area.
ODOT engineers and geotechnical experts are continuing their evaluation of the slide. “There are still many unknowns, so it’s too early to set a detailed timeline. Based on what is known right now, fully rebuilding OR 229 is expected to take years. The team will continue to assess over the winter months as conditions allow,” ODOT stated.
The landslide is described as complex, with some areas experiencing large blocks of soil and rock shifting while others turned into muddy flows due to excess water. Instability around the edges means that even accessing the site on foot remains unsafe.
“ODOT is working with experts to evaluate the full extent of the slide and develop potential options for how to move forward. The consultant will continue assessment work as conditions allow and is expected to outline possible approaches and timelines once more information can be gathered safely,” according to ODOT.
Currently, there is no local detour available for travelers. ODOT has developed a long-term detour plan and is evaluating short-term solutions while crews complete detour signage. Updated travel information will be shared once signage is in place and posted on TripCheck.com.
The closure has had a notable impact on local communities and travelers because sections of OR 229 were destroyed by the slide and remain unstable. Reopening will require more than debris removal; it involves extensive investigation, design, funding, and construction similar to building an entirely new road.
ODOT says it will continue monitoring conditions at the site and provide updates as more information becomes available.
