Eastbound traffic on Interstate 84 at McCord Creek will be reduced to one lane starting Tuesday, September 2, 2025. This change is part of a project to replace the eastbound bridge over McCord Creek in the Columbia River Gorge.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) stated that replacing the bridge will address a dip in the road and improve safety, earthquake resilience, and extend the highway’s lifespan. Work crews have been preparing the site during the summer and are now moving into construction visible to travelers.

Travelers should expect continuous single lane and shoulder closures on I-84 eastbound at McCord Creek through late 2025. ODOT advises drivers to check tripcheck.com or call 5-1-1 for current traffic alerts. The agency also offers a Region 1 newsletter for ongoing updates.

ODOT noted that while its funding crisis is affecting maintenance and operations, most construction projects like this bridge replacement will proceed as planned. These projects use capital funds from state or federal sources that are legally set aside for development work and cannot be used for daily operations or maintenance. However, if staffing levels drop further, there could be delays due to fewer personnel available for inspections and oversight. More information about ODOT’s funding situation can be found on their website: https://www.oregon.gov/odot/pages/index.aspx

“We will share more information and updates as work progresses. Visit tripcheck.com or call 5-1-1 for traffic alerts. You can also sign up for our Region 1 newsletter to stay up to date.”
