Lookout Eugene-Springfield hosted a forum for Lane County commissioner candidates, according to an April 24 letter to the editor by Alan Cohen. The event provided an opportunity for voters to hear from candidates in several districts and compare their positions on key issues.
The forum aimed to inform the public about their choices in the upcoming election and allow direct comparison between those running for office. Cohen said that the questions posed during the event were relevant and covered a broad range of topics.
In the Springfield District 2 segment, David Loveall was described as defensive and combative, with concerns raised about his approach to transparency. Sean VanGordon was characterized as friendly and open, while William Monsoor was noted for offering inventive ideas. “I believe Loveall will continue to do more harm than good if reelected. I think VanGordon and Monsoor would both make good commissioners,” Cohen said.
For West Lane District 1, Ryan Ceniga was mentioned as having advanced from Junction City but faced criticism regarding transparency. Thomas Hiura was praised for his accountability and ability to connect with people from various backgrounds.
In East Lane District 5, Bob Zybach focused on expanding the timber industry as a solution to problems. Jake Pelroy raised concerns about permitting and land management but lacked clear solutions, according to Cohen’s letter. Heather Buch received support for her technical focus and community-oriented approach.
The candidate forums sponsored by Lookout Eugene-Springfield are part of ongoing efforts to engage local residents in civic processes ahead of county elections.
