The intersection known as the “Big X” in Medford, where Oregon 62, Oregon 99 and Oregon 238 meet, is nearing the end of a major upgrade project. The area covered by the project includes OR 62 between OR 99 and Poplar Drive, OR 99 between Ohio Street and Table Rock Road, and OR 238 between OR 99 and North Ross Lane.

This marks the first significant renovation at this intersection since its completion in 2000. Increased population and commercial growth have led to higher traffic volumes, with over 38,000 vehicles passing through the intersection daily.

Project improvements include new pavement and lane striping. The cracked road surface was replaced with fresh asphalt, while new striping provides more space between vehicle lanes and bicycle lanes for increased safety.

Major bridge decks were rehabilitated on OR 62 over Bear Creek, Interstate 5 and Biddle Road, as well as on OR 238 over the CORP railroad tracks. Drainage systems were also upgraded before repaving took place.

An eastbound travel lane from OR 238 to OR 62 has been added. There are now three lanes crossing OR 99 instead of two, allowing more vehicles to move through each traffic light cycle.

A new traffic signal system has been installed that uses cameras and radar sensors to detect approaching vehicles. The system adjusts signal timing based on real-time traffic volume. Because it does not rely on traditional sensor loops embedded in pavement, future repairs can be completed without affecting sensor function.

For pedestrians and cyclists, a narrow sidewalk along OR 62 was replaced with a wider multi-use path. This moves westbound bicycle traffic off the roadway onto the path to help reduce collisions with motor vehicles.

To improve accessibility throughout the area, crews installed eighty-eight curb ramps that comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
