Navitas Organics has announced a voluntary recall of specific lots of its 8oz Organic Chia Seeds due to potential Salmonella contamination. The decision follows a recall by the company’s chia seed supplier and is described as a precautionary measure.

The recalled product was distributed across the United States in retail outlets such as Whole Foods Market and Target, and through online retailers including Amazon, iHerb, and Vitacost.com. The affected products are identified as Navitas Organics – Organic Chia Seeds, 8oz, UPC 858847000284. The lot codes involved begin with “W” and include W31025283, W31025286, W31025287 (all best if used by end of April 2027), and W31025311, W31025314, W31025315, W31025316, W31025317 (all best if used by end of May 2027). Lot codes can be found on the back of each bag above the nutritional information.

Navitas Organics stated there have been no reports of Salmonella presence in their product so far, nor any illnesses or adverse medical events related to this recall. Other Navitas Organics products are not impacted.

“Navitas has provided Organic Chia Seeds to our customers for more than 20 years. Providing safe, healthy food for our customers is why we have been in business this long and it’s why we are recalling this product today,” said Ira Haber, CEO.

Salmonella can cause serious infections especially among young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases it can lead to severe illness if the bacteria enters the bloodstream.

Consumers who possess any of the listed lots are advised not to consume them. Instead they should open the bag, discard the seeds inside and dispose of the packaging so it cannot be reused.

Customers may return recalled products to their place of purchase for a refund or contact Navitas Organics at 855-215-5702 from 8am to 8pm ET Monday through Friday for further assistance or replacement options.

The company reports that it is cooperating closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during this process. “We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused by this recall,” according to Navitas Organics.

In Oregon, agencies such as the Oregon Department of Agriculture provide laboratory services that support diagnostic testing in food safety cases like these (https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/Pages/default.aspx). The department regulates areas including food safety as part of its broader mission to protect natural resources and support agriculture statewide (https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/Pages/default.aspx).
