Bethel Branch Library marked its 25th anniversary on April 18 with a community celebration that brought together neighbors, local officials, and families. The event featured music, face painting, balloon animals, and refreshments as residents reflected on the branch’s role in fostering connections and learning.
The anniversary highlighted the importance of neighborhood libraries as more than just places to borrow books. They serve as gathering spaces where people of all ages come together for storytimes, performances, and shared experiences.
Retired library employee Connie Johnson said, “I live just a mile away — this is my library branch. It was such a privilege to help bring services to this whole community. I just fell in love with the citizens and getting to do storytimes and see families.”
Music from Mariachi Monarcas set the tone for the day’s festivities before being followed by songs from the Raging Grannies about the value of libraries. Eugene Mayor Kaarin Knudson addressed attendees: “There is so much love about this place in our community. Bethel Branch is a place where our culture and language are uplifted every day,” Knudson said. “Libraries remind us that knowledge is a shared resource, and that we are stronger when we learn and grow together.”
Rachel, a Bethel patron who has been attending storytimes with her daughter Lucy since she was six months old, said: “All the librarians know her, which is great social interaction for her.”
The celebrations will continue at Sheldon Branch Library on April 25 from noon to 5 p.m., offering more family activities as another neighborhood marks its own milestone.
