The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced that Interstate 5 will be fully closed in both directions during nighttime hours from January 12 to January 14, 2026. The closure will take place between Kuebler Boulevard and Delaney Road in South Salem as part of an ongoing widening project. The construction includes building a new Battle Creek Road Bridge, which will connect to a roundabout east of I-5.

According to ODOT, the closures are scheduled nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. All traffic will be detoured onto Commercial Street SE and Kuebler Boulevard depending on travel direction. Northbound travelers should follow signs directing them to Commercial Street SE, then right onto Kuebler Boulevard before rejoining northbound I-5. Southbound drivers are advised to exit onto Kuebler Boulevard, turn left on Commercial Street SE, and then return to southbound I-5.

“Nighttime full I-5 closures in both directions January 12 – 14. I-5 closures to last between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. All traffic to detour onto Commercial Street SE and Kuebler Boulevard, depending on the direction you need to go. North and southbound I-5 to reopen to traffic after 5 a.m. Delays and construction noise,” ODOT stated.

Travelers can expect delays, construction noise, daytime and nighttime work by crews, lane and ramp closures as needed, as well as a reduced speed limit of 55 mph within the work zone.

ODOT advises motorists to check TripCheck.com for up-to-date information about traffic conditions and any changes in the closure schedule.

The department also reminds drivers that fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present: “Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work. Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.”

More information about road projects can be found on ODOT’s project webpage where residents can view an interactive map showing current constructions in their community.
