Drivers using northbound Interstate 5 near the Aurora-Donald Interchange should prepare for a temporary closure of Exit 278 at Ehlen Road NE. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced that the off-ramp will be closed for two days starting Monday, December 29 at 7 a.m., with plans to reopen it by Tuesday, December 30 at 4 p.m. The closure is necessary for crews to install drainage pipes in the area.
During this period, passenger vehicles will be directed to detour via I-5 Exit 271, east on OR 214, then north on OR 99E and onto OR 551 before reaching Ehlen Road NE. Semi-trucks are advised to continue north on I-5 to Exit 282, turn around, head south on I-5 and then take Exit 278.
The work zone will see construction equipment moving in and out frequently, sometimes using the far left lane. Drivers are urged to avoid this lane within the work area and observe all posted signs. Additional impacts include daily work from Sunday through Thursday with possible night and weekend shifts. Up to two lanes may close nightly in either direction between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., while single lane closures on other roads in the project area could occur from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Speed limits are reduced to 55 mph within the I-5 work zone. Drivers should expect noise and delays due to construction activities. Lane changes are prohibited where double white lines are present, and there may be grooves along the median shoulder requiring extra caution.
“Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work. Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers,” ODOT stated.
The agency also reminded drivers that fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present.
Access for pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will remain available through or around affected areas during construction.
