The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on March 12 that the Old Youngs Bay Bridge will be fully closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, to allow crews to safely complete ongoing maintenance work.

The closure is necessary as workers replace support beams and posts under the bridge. Most of the construction activity is taking place beneath the structure, but officials say a full closure is required for safety during this phase of the project.

During the closure, drivers will be directed along a signed detour using the U.S. 101 New Youngs Bay Bridge. The department notes that all work is weather-dependent and schedules may change if conditions require.

As construction continues in the coming weeks, travelers can expect single lane closures Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with additional nighttime lane closures as needed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Noise and delays are anticipated throughout the project period. In cases of high or king tides, crews may shift some work to nighttime hours to stay on schedule.

Officials urge motorists to use caution when driving through work zones, obey posted signs, and watch for workers. “Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work,” said an Oregon Department of Transportation spokesperson in the announcement.

Access for pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will remain available through or around all work zones. The department also reminds travelers that fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present.
