The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced a change to the reopening schedule for OR 47 at Messing Creek in Mist. The road, which was expected to reopen by August 21, will now remain closed until at least September 2 due to unexpected complications. At that time, one lane of traffic and pedestrian access is expected to resume.

“This work is weather-dependent and our schedule may still change. We’ll keep you updated on our progress,” ODOT stated.

During the closure, travelers can expect OR 47 to be inaccessible on both sides of Messing Creek. A signed detour route using OR 47, Apiary Road, and U.S. 30 is in place for those needing to bypass the area. There will be no pedestrian or local access across the bridge while construction continues. Work crews are scheduled Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional night work as needed. Construction noise and delays should be anticipated.

The project involves building a new culvert at Messing Creek aimed at improving road drainage and fish passage.

“Thank you for your patience while we work to build a new culvert for Messing Creek to improve road drainage and fish passage,” ODOT said.

Those interested in more details about the project can visit the OR 47 Messing Creek Culvert Replacement webpage.

Parents and teachers connected with Mist Grade School are being kept informed about changes that may impact the upcoming school year due to these construction delays. For questions related to potential impacts on school schedules, Vernonia School District Superintendent Jim Helman and Vernonia and Mist Elementary Principal Michelle Eagleson are available as contacts.

Despite a funding crisis affecting maintenance and operations within ODOT, most construction projects like this one continue because they rely on funds legally restricted for project development rather than daily operations or maintenance needs. More information about ODOT’s funding situation is available on their website: https://www.oregon.gov/odot/Pages/Funding-Crisis.aspx

Travelers are reminded to drive safely in work zones where fines double regardless of whether workers or signs are present.

For current road conditions and alerts around Oregon, drivers can use TripCheck.com (https://tripcheck.com/) or call 5-1-1 for updates before traveling.

ODOT also encourages sharing information about this closure with others who may be affected so they can stay informed about ongoing projects in their community.
