The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on March 25 that overnight construction will begin March 29 on U.S. 20 in Sisters to upgrade curb ramps and pedestrian crossings to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The start date was moved up from the original plan of April 12.

These upgrades are intended to make it easier and safer for people walking or using mobility devices to travel through downtown Sisters and access nearby businesses and services.

Construction will begin at Cascade Street, continuing west along the north side of U.S. 20. Most work is scheduled at night, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Friday, in order to reduce daytime traffic disruptions.

During the project, travelers can expect crews working throughout the area, overnight construction noise, sidewalk and lane closures, flaggers directing traffic as needed, and minimal delays. If the work is not finished by Memorial Day, crews will pause for summer and resume after Labor Day.

The department reminds drivers that fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present. They also encourage safe driving practices: “Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work! Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.” Construction schedules depend on weather conditions and may change; updates can be found at TripCheck.com.
