Crews from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will begin paving work on U.S. 30 in Rainier later this year, aiming to repair and improve a section of the roadway that has sustained damage.
During construction, residents and drivers can expect daytime work with lane and shoulder closures, flaggers directing traffic, lane shifts as needed, and periods of increased noise and delays. Ramp closures are also planned for access points connecting U.S. 30 to SR 433 on the Lewis and Clark Bridge. Signed detours will be in place during these closures. The specific timing and duration of ramp closures have not yet been determined; ODOT states it will provide updates when more information becomes available.
The project includes removing and grinding down the current road surface, rebuilding and installing new pavement, applying permanent striping and reflective markers, and installing new concrete barriers along some sections of the center line. According to ODOT, these improvements are intended to “reduce maintenance costs, give travelers a smoother ride and improve safety and accessibility for all.”
ODOT encourages drivers to use caution in work zones, obey posted signs, slow down near construction areas, and be aware that fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present.
In addition to the U.S. 30 project, ODOT is inviting community members to learn about upcoming repairs scheduled for the Astoria-Megler Bridge in 2027. An in-person open house will be held at the ODOT Astoria office on January 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at 350 W Marine Drive in Astoria. Accessible parking is available at the front of the building. For those unable to attend in person, an online open house is available through January 25 where participants can review plans for roadwork and closures as well as ask questions or share feedback.
