Construction to upgrade curb ramps in Monmouth and Independence to meet current ADA accessibility standards is set to begin later this month, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The project is part of a larger initiative that aims to bring more than 2,300 curb ramps across the Willamette Valley and North Coast into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Work will take place during the day from Monday through Thursday, with occasional night or Friday shifts as needed. Lane shifts, shoulder and lane closures, and flaggers directing traffic are expected. Delays and construction noise may occur due to activities such as saw cutting.

ODOT encourages drivers and other road users to slow down in work zones and be mindful of workers. “Whether you drive, ride, walk or roll, we are committed to providing the best accessibility possible to all people using the transportation system,” ODOT stated.

The agency highlighted the importance of ADA-compliant curb ramps for improving mobility between sidewalks and roads. “ADA curb ramps make it easier for people to move between the sidewalk and road. This can be helpful for those who have trouble stepping up and down high curbs. It’s also helpful for people using wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, hand carts and bicycles,” ODOT said. “By making curb ramps gently slope to the road, it improves accessibility and makes it easier for everyone to get around, whether they have a disability or not.”

Information about ongoing projects in local communities can be found on ODOT’s website through an interactive map showing current construction activities.

The department reminds motorists that fines double in all Oregon work zones regardless of whether workers or signs are present.
