The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced a series of changes to its field office operations, set to begin in October. The agency aims to provide customers with more consistent and predictable service.
A pilot program will require appointments at five DMV offices. Beginning October 2, the Bend office will operate by appointment only on Thursdays, while continuing to serve both drop-in and appointment customers on other weekdays. Starting October 8, the Corvallis and South Salem offices will be appointment-only on Wednesdays. From October 13, both the Junction City and Springfield offices will require appointments for all services.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve our services,” said DMV Administrator Amy Joyce. “By offering appointment-only days in these offices, you can book an appointment online on DMV2U, show up at your designated time and be confident you’ll be served.”
Appointments can be scheduled through DMV2U online. For those without internet access or who need help with scheduling, assistance is available by calling DMV Customer Assistance during business hours.
If the pilot proves successful, it may expand to additional locations. Drop-in service will continue on non-appointment-only days; however, making an appointment or using one of the more than 20 online services—such as license renewals or vehicle registration—remains recommended.
Another change taking effect October 1 limits customers to two Class C knowledge tests or motorcycle endorsement knowledge tests per day at DMV offices. Previously, there was no daily limit for these tests. According to the DMV, some individuals have attempted the test ten or more times in a single day without adequately preparing.
This adjustment is intended to allow staff to assist more people and reduce wait times while encouraging better preparation among test-takers. The new limit aligns with that of the online knowledge test offered through DMV2U in eight languages. Each attempt costs $7 whether taken in person or online.
The Lebanon and Stayton field offices are also expanding their operating hours from three days a week to five days a week starting October 6. Both locations will now open Monday through Friday.
“Staffing in these two offices has stabilized, and we’ve made changes to operations to confidently open both offices up to the community five days a week,” Joyce said.
