A new Oregon Zoo license plate will be available to Oregon drivers starting November 3, according to an announcement from the Oregon Department of Transportation. The plate, sponsored by the Oregon Zoo Foundation, features a design highlighting the zoo’s endangered Asian elephant population and Portland’s “Rose City” nickname. Artist Jeremy Nichols created the artwork, which aims to promote preservation of nature.
Oregon Zoo plates will require an additional $40 fee at purchase and with each renewal or replacement, on top of standard registration fees. Of this surcharge, about $35 is directed back to the Oregon Zoo Foundation to fund conservation education, species recovery, and animal wellbeing.
The license plate design was approved by the Oregon Department of Transportation in consultation with the Oregon Zoo Foundation and Oregon State Police. It was also tested by the Washington State Tolling Division.
With this addition, the Oregon Zoo plate joins other specialty plates offered by DMV such as Crater Lake, Cultural Trust, Gray Whale, Oregon Ducks, OSU Beavers, Pacific Wonderland, Pollinator Paradise, Salmon, Smokey Bear, Trail Blazers, Watch for Wildlife and Wine Country.
The new plate can be obtained through several channels: by mail, at DMV field offices or through licensed dealers beginning November 3. Early applications are not accepted. Customers can apply online via DMV2U for renewals or stand-alone replacements but must visit a DMV office or mail their application if they wish to redeem a pre-paid voucher.
“DMV staff will verify the paper voucher by entering the voucher number into the system,” according to officials.
