The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles announced that its John Day office, located at 193 N. Canyon Blvd., is closed today due to staffing challenges.

According to the agency, staffing levels have remained about the same for the past 25 years, despite an increase of 800,000 residents in Oregon during that time. The department noted that a current hiring freeze has led to temporary closures when there are not enough employees available to staff certain offices. As a result, customers who visit DMV offices without appointments may experience longer wait times and may not be able to receive service on the same day.

Oregon DMV advises customers to check office status before visiting and consider making an appointment. Other options include completing transactions online through DMV2U, renewing vehicle registration at one of ten self-serve Express Kiosks located in Fred Meyer stores, or using mail-in services.
