The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on April 15 that paving work will begin this week in Ashland as part of a project to upgrade sidewalk curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
This project is important because it aims to improve accessibility for all pedestrians, including those with disabilities. The upgrades are intended to ensure compliance with federal requirements and make public spaces more accessible.
A subcontractor for HP Civil, Inc. will conduct daytime paving on Thursday, April 16 and Friday, April 17 at new ramp locations along Oregon 99, which includes North Main Street, East Main Street, and Lithia Way. The department advises travelers to use caution and be aware of workers present in the area. Intermittent lane closures and increased congestion are expected at each work site as crews move through the project area. Pedestrian routes will remain available during ramp construction and lane closures.
Work scheduled for this week will be completed at as many sites as possible depending on time and weather conditions. The contractor plans to return in May to finish paving any remaining curb ramps that were not completed during this phase.
The current effort in Ashland is part of a broader initiative called Jackson County Curb Ramps Phase 2, which involves upgrading ADA curb ramps at intersections throughout Jackson County. According to the department’s announcement, work in Ashland remains on schedule for completion by the end of May.
