Heat pump water heaters are gaining attention as a more efficient alternative to traditional gas and electric-resistance units, plumber Armando Ramos said on Apr. 14 through his TikTok account @PlomeroEnPhoenix.

The growing interest in these systems matters because they can help homeowners reduce energy use and utility bills while also benefiting the environment. Heat pump water heaters operate by pulling warmth from the surrounding air into the water tank using technology similar to a refrigerator but in reverse, Ramos explained.

“These heaters can be up to three times more energy-efficient than traditional electric water heaters. This means significant savings on your utility bills! By leveraging the existing warmth in the air, it requires less electricity to heat your water,” Ramos said. He also pointed out that reduced energy use helps lower a household’s carbon footprint.

Ramos addressed concerns about whether these units work well in cold climates. When asked, “What if it’s cold outside? Where does [the water heater] pull all of the heat from?” he replied: “[The unit] has a hybrid option in case the demand is higher. We have units running [in garages], heat pump only mode, during the winter without any issues.”

He further recommended that anyone considering replacing their conventional system should look into heat pump models: “If you’re in the market for a water heater, I definitely recommend looking into heat pump water heaters.”

Companies like Cala are offering advanced models that combine hardware and software to optimize efficiency and even integrate with solar panels or respond to real-time electricity prices. Rebates may be available locally to offset upfront costs for those upgrading appliances.
