The Portland State women’s basketball team announced on April 17 the addition of Sara Barhoum, a record-setting three-point shooter from Clackamas High School who played her freshman season at the University of Oregon.

Barhoum’s arrival is seen as an important move for the Vikings, who struggled with three-point shooting last season. She holds Oregon’s single-season and career records for three-pointers made, achievements she reached during her senior year while leading Clackamas to the state championship game.

“Sara is a flamethrower from deep,” Portland State head coach Karlie Burris said. “As a true three-point specialist, she’ll play a major role in shaping our offensive identity. Her work ethic and approach to the game set her apart, and her length and range at the guard position allows her to immediately stretch the floor. With valuable experience at Oregon, she brings both skill and maturity to our program. We’re excited to welcome her back to Portland.”

During Clackamas’ run in the OSAA 6A state tournament semifinals, Barhoum scored 25 points against Jefferson High School and broke Shoni Schimmel’s single-season record for three-pointers set in 2009-10. In the title game loss against Tualatin—whose roster included future Viking teammates—she tied Bria Dixon’s career mark with four more threes.

Barhoum was named first-team all-tournament as a senior and earned second-team all-state honors after receiving honorable mentions earlier in high school. She finished her prep career with over 1,500 points and more than 300 made threes before playing limited minutes (4.6 per game) across 14 appearances for Oregon last season.

The Vikings hope that Barhoum will help address their perimeter shooting woes after ranking last in Big Sky Conference play for both percentage (.265) and makes per game (4.39). Her signing marks an effort by Portland State to strengthen its offense ahead of next season.
