The Portland State men’s tennis team lost 5-2 to Sacramento State on April 16 in their final regular-season conference match, which resulted in the Vikings being eliminated from Big Sky Tournament contention.

This result means the Vikings finished their season with a 6-14 overall record and a 2-5 mark in Big Sky play. With this win, Sacramento State improved to an even 11-11 overall and also moved to 2-5 in conference action. The Hornets’ victory pushed them ahead of Portland State in the standings, earning them a spot in the upcoming Big Sky Tournament.

Sacramento State secured the doubles point by winning matches at No. 2 and No. 3 positions, giving them an early lead. In singles play, Ignacio Ruiz earned Portland State’s first point with a straight-set victory over Sebastian Vlahos at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-3. However, Sacramento State responded with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles before clinching the match at No. 3 when Doni Gashi came back to defeat Luca Prino in three sets: 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Luke Lu added another point for Portland State at No. 6 singles by defeating Yoav Levy after a close contest that ended 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. In the last match of the day at No. 2 singles Maas Schotanus took Nick Bowles to three sets but ultimately fell short: 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Portland State will conclude its season on Friday against UC Davis.
