The Portland State softball team split a doubleheader against Northern Colorado on April 17 at Hillsboro Ballpark, winning the opener 10-2 before falling 8-0 in the second game.
The result leaves Portland State with a record of 13-27 overall and 3-8 in Big Sky Conference play. The games were important for both teams as they seek to improve their conference standings.
In the first game, Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and one earned run. The Vikings scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Mia Martinez’s bases-loaded double that brought in three runs. Rylee Gaustad followed with an infield single to score another run. Additional runs came from RBI singles and opponent errors, with Nichole Orozco contributing a ground-rule double that drove in Nakoa-Chung. Gaustad led the team with three hits while Martinez recorded five runs batted in.
The second game saw Portland State struggle offensively, managing just one hit—a single by Grace Johnson—while Northern Colorado took advantage of seven walks and five hit-by-pitches to secure an 8-0 win by run rule.
Portland State will look for its first Big Sky series win of the season during Saturday’s finale at Hillsboro Ballpark. The team is scheduled to honor its five seniors following that game.
