The Portland State women’s golf team finished in eighth place out of 13 teams at the Bobcat Desert Classic, according to an announcement on April 15. The tournament took place at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona.

This result is significant as it marks one of the team’s better performances this season, with a total score of 898 over three rounds. It was also the third time this year that Portland State has broken a team score of 900.

Senior Payten Shimizu led the Vikings in the final round with an even-par 72, her best round of the spring. Shimizu completed the event tied for 43rd among 80 golfers with a total score of 230 over three rounds. Senior Bayler Brundage also had her best round on Wednesday, shooting a two-over-par 74 and finishing in 42nd place overall. Sophomore Maddie Dustin was Portland State’s top finisher, placing nineteenth after posting scores of 71-73-78 for a total of 222—just one stroke shy of her season-best for a three-round tournament.

Junior Cynthia Valerie Ong placed thirty-sixth and remains the team’s scoring average leader this season with an average score per round of 75.29. Junior Momo Udom rounded out Portland State’s competitors by finishing seventy-sixth.

Seattle University won the team title with a nine-over-par score of 873, edging host Montana State by three shots. Wyoming’s Kiley Reisner claimed individual honors after shooting five-under-par (211) across all rounds.

Looking ahead, Portland State will compete in the Big Sky Conference Championship starting Monday at Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
