The Portland State women’s tennis team lost to Sacramento State on Apr. 19, ending their season with a 5-2 defeat at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex.

The outcome was significant for Portland State, as the loss eliminated them from contention for next week’s Big Sky Tournament by dropping them out of the top six in the conference standings.

Sacramento State secured the doubles point after winning matches at No. 2 and No. 3 positions, despite a victory from Hana Abdelhamid and Marta Giglio at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-4. In singles play, Giglio earned a straight-set win at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2), while Abdelhamid picked up Portland State’s second point by default at No. 4.

The Hornets claimed victories in four other singles matches, including straight-set wins at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles and a win by retirement at the top spot.

With this result, Portland State finished its season with an overall record of seven wins and eight losses (3-5 in Big Sky Conference play). The team’s absence from the postseason tournament marks an end to their current campaign.
