The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that a rail crossing safety improvement project will begin April 17 on Pole Line Lane and U.S. 30 between Haines and Baker City in Baker County. The work is expected to cause road closures and detours through May.
The project aims to enhance safety at the rail crossing by eliminating the steep approach, repaving the area around the crossing, tying the roadway into U.S. 30, and installing new signs.
According to the announcement, Pole Line Lane will be closed for up to three weeks starting Friday, April 17. Additionally, U.S. 30 will close between Haines and Chandler Lane for up to two weeks beginning Monday, April 27. These closures are necessary so crews can complete improvements connecting Pole Line Lane with U.S. 30.
Local traffic can use Pocahontas Road and Wingville Lane as detour routes during these closures. Motor carriers traveling north on U.S. 30 from Baker City must detour at Davenport Road and use Exit 298 for access to Interstate-84 (I-84). Those traveling east on I-84 who need access to U.S. 30 for Baker City should also use Exit 298 and follow posted detours.
The Oregon Department of Transportation said that signed detours will be in place throughout construction and encourages travelers to visit the project webpage for more information.
