The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on March 9 that construction of a new retaining wall along the south side of Oregon 38 at Hinsdale Slough will reduce the highway to a single lane for about one week.

The project is expected to affect drivers east of Reedsport, starting Monday, March 16. The work will take place near milepost 5, at the east end of the Dean Creek Elk Viewing area. Traffic on Umpqua Highway will be limited to a single lane during weekdays and daylight hours while contractors build the retaining wall around the inlet of a box culvert.

Flaggers will be present to control traffic, and delays are expected to be less than 20 minutes. Carter & Company Inc., based in Salem, is serving as the prime contractor for this $322,522 project.

For more information about current road conditions or updates on this project, drivers are encouraged to visit www.TripCheck.com or contact ODOT Public Information Officer Dan Latham at 541-817-5200.

The Oregon Department of Transportation said these improvements are part of ongoing efforts to maintain safe travel routes throughout the region.
