The Oregon Department of Transportation announced on March 20 that a safety improvement project will begin March 23 along Interstate 84 between Portland and Hood River. The work is expected to continue through fall 2026, with occasional traffic impacts including shoulder, lane, and ramp closures at various interchange ramps.
The project aims to enhance safety and visibility at multiple on- and off-ramp interchanges along the corridor. Travelers can expect daytime and nighttime single-lane and shoulder closures, temporary shutdowns of traffic signals at some intersections overnight, and temporary sidewalk closures with accessible pedestrian detours. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic during these periods.
According to the department, the improvements are part of Oregon’s All Roads Transportation Safety Program (ARTS), which identifies intersections with high crash rates and implements measures to reduce accidents. Planned upgrades include removing obstructions such as tree limbs for better visibility, improving traffic signals, upgrading curb ramps and crosswalks, enhancing street lighting, and adding or improving signs and striping—including “Stop Ahead” warning signs and reflective markers on signals.
The affected interchanges span several locations in Portland as well as Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village, Troutdale, and Hood River. The schedule may change due to weather or other factors. The department encourages travelers to sign up for its project newsletter for updates about current and planned traffic impacts.
This initiative reflects ongoing efforts by state transportation officials to address roadway safety concerns through targeted infrastructure improvements.
