Crews are scheduled to conduct drilling on sidewalks in downtown La Grande on Friday, Dec. 19, as part of preparations for the Eastern Oregon 2024-2027 ADA curb ramps project, phase 3.
Drilling will occur at several intersections along U.S. 30/Adams Avenue, including the southwest corner of Fourth Street; the north and east corners of Chestnut Street; all corners of Depot Street and Elm Street; the east corner of Fir Street; and the east corner of Hemlock Street.
The Oregon Department Of Transportation stated that travel lanes and parking areas will remain open during the work. However, sidewalk detours may be implemented in narrow areas to maintain pedestrian safety. “All pedestrians will still be able to move safely through or around work zones,” according to information provided by ODOT.
The process involves using hand-held equipment to drill approximately six inches into the sidewalk surface to examine what lies beneath. A scope camera will help crews identify materials or any voids below the concrete. Drilling will not occur above known basements, and each location is expected to take less than an hour, with holes being patched immediately after drilling.
“This work is part of a larger effort to bring curb ramps in Eastern Oregon up to current ADA standards, improving safety and access for everyone,” according to ODOT.
Construction for phase 3 is planned to begin in fall 2026.
