The South West Area Commission on Transportation (SWACT) is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting on Friday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The session will be open to the public, with time allocated for public input.

The agenda includes updates on SWACT membership, the Critical Oregon Airport Relief (COAR) program, news about the Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Region 3 construction program, and information from the ODOT Region 3 Manager regarding budget matters.

SWACT is made up of local community leaders and interested parties from Coos, Curry, and Douglas Counties. The commission meets up to six times each year to discuss transportation issues related to planning, funding, and operations of the state transportation system in southwest Oregon. It also provides input to the Oregon Transportation Commission on local priorities that have statewide significance and on broader policy topics.

Accommodations for people with disabilities are available upon request by calling 503-986-4188 or using statewide relay 7-1-1 at least two days before the meeting. For more details about the event or agenda access via Microsoft Teams, contact ODOT Public Information Officer Dan Latham at Dan.Latham@odot.oregon.gov or call 541-817-5200.

According to ODOT officials, while a current funding crisis is affecting maintenance and operations across the department, most construction projects will proceed as planned because they are financed through separate capital programs with funds that cannot legally be redirected for maintenance or daily operations. However, project delays may occur if workforce reductions lead to fewer staff available for inspections and oversight.

Further information about ODOT’s funding challenges can be found at their website.

“The group also provides input to the Oregon Transportation Commission on local priorities of statewide importance and on statewide policy issues.”
