Freshman Sarah Haendiges earned the pitcher's duel victory in the circle as Oregon State softball took home its first Pac-12 victory of the season after defeating No. 25 Stanford by a score of 1-0 at Kelly Field on Friday night. With the result, the Beavers improve to 24-7 overall and 1-3 during conference play.
Haendiges pitched the complete seven-inning game, allowing just three hits and struck out a career-best nine after facing 25 Cardinal batters. Junior Frankie Hammoude led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance and the lone RBI.
Kiki Escobar, Savanah Whatley and Madison Simon added the other three hits for the Orange & Black.
Oregon State broke through in the first after Whatley collected her first Beaver hit in her first Orange & Black plate appearance this season with a double to left field. Hammoude eventually drove in the Utah transfer with a deep RBI sacrifice fly to center.
Stanford looked to even things up in the third with runners on second and third with two outs. Haendiges stopped the threat with her second strikeout of the frame and fourth of the night.
Haendiges continued her hot performance, sitting two more Cardinal down in the fifth with a pair of strikeouts. The Beaver offense looked to feed off the energy with a Simon single up the middle in the bottom half but left runners stranded on the corners.
The freshman phenom retired the side in the top of the seventh to secure her seventh victory of her young Beaver career.
