Back-to-back heat wins have earned Chase Lovercheck Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors, as the conference announced its weekly awards Monday. The honor is the first weekly award of Lovercheck's career, and makes him the first Portland State men's athlete to earn the honor during the outdoor season since Nevin Lewis in 2014.
Lovercheck won his second straight 800-meter race at the Oregon Relays this past Saturday, winning the open section of the event in 1:51.63. Lovercheck has now run his second- and third-fastest times as a Viking over the past two weeks, as he won his heat at the Bryan Clay Invitational by a second and a half while finishing in 1:51.40.
Both recent times trail only Lovercheck's personal best of 1:50.92, which he ran while making a surprise podium finish at the 2019 Big Sky Outdoor Championships back when he was a freshman. The results of the past two weeks mean he should be a podium threat again this year, with the Big Sky Outdoor Championships – in Pocatello, Idaho, this year – under three weeks away.
Lovercheck and the rest of the Vikings will first run at the OSU High Performance Meet down in Corvallis, Ore., this weekend.
