Viking Soccer Adds Six Ahead of 2022 Season

The Portland State women's soccer team has completed its 2022 roster with the addition of six student-athletes, head coach Katie Burton announced on Thursday.

A total of twelve newcomers will join Burton's squad for the 2022 season.

"We are excited to announce the second half of our 2022 incoming class," Burton said. "They all add flair and depth to our already talented group of returners and incoming athletes and they come from an array of different areas of the west coast!"

Sophomore transfer CeCe Jenkins will join the Vikings after two years at Peninsula College in Washington.

"Cece is a native to Hawaii, where she grew up with one of our current players, Kailee Quartero," Burton said. "She will give us depth and will be a very technical addition to our midfield."

Jenkins was a two-time State Champion at Mililani High School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, before helping lead Peninsula College to an NWAC Championship in 2021. During her time with the Pirates, Jenkins made 13 starts, recording five goals and three assists.

Defender Kalo Longi will begin her collegiate career with the Vikings this fall. A 2022 graduate of Orem High School in Orem, Utah, Longi played club for La Roca and Celtic FC, winning five State Championships during her time with the two teams.

Fellow defender and Utah native Leah Heugly will also join the Vikings in August. A first team all-state selection and defensive player of the year at Real Salt Lake Academy High School, Heugly spent the past three years playing for the USA Metro Soccer Club.

"Leah and Kalo both come from Utah, where we have recently added a number of very hardworking and mentally tough players from," Burton said. "Both are versatile and can play a number of roles for us in the coming years."

Forward and Riverside, Calif. native Ocean Rideout signed her NLI this spring. A four-year letterwinner and team Captain at Arlington High School, Rideout was a first team all-league selection and was named the Offensive MVP in 2021.

"Ocean is extremely quick and athletic," Burton said. "She will be an additional threat to getting behind back lines with the amount of pace she has."

Rideout was a four-time recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award and currently plays club for Future FC.

Oregon natives Natalie Cunningham and Emma Johnston will also make their collegiate debuts this fall.

A goalkeeper from Salem, Ore., Cunningham was a four-year letterwinner at West Salem High School, where she was an all-league selection and a second team all-state honoree while leading West Salem to two conference championships.

"Natalie is a top goalkeeper from the Portland area that will immediately make our current goalkeeper battle extremely competitive," Burton said.

Johnston, a forward out of Eugene, Ore., rounds out the group of newcomers.

"Emma will be adding to an already Oregon-heavy roster from Eugene," Burton said. "She brings a highly competitive spirit and work rate to our front line."

A 2021 Team Captain, Johnston was a four-year letterwinner at Sheldon High School, where she earned first team all-conference honors as a senior. She has spent four seasons with ETFC, helping lead them to a State Championship in 2021.

"The addition of these six athletes to our current squad will make for one of our most promising and talented classes," Burton said. "They will all play a key role in our success this fall."

The Vikings will open the 2022 season against British Columbia on Aug. 11 at Hillsboro Stadium.
