The Portland State women's soccer team rolled past Western Oregon 4-1 on Sunday evening at Hillsboro Stadium to claim its first victory of the season.
The Vikings improved to 1-1 on the season. Sunday's match counted as an exhibition for the Wolves as they remain recordless.
A brace from Abi Hoffman powered the Vikings' offense. The sophomore netted two penalty kick goals in the contest, the first coming in the 12th minute after teammate Raniyah Burton was fouled in the box. An own goal from the Wolves extended the Viking's lead in the 43rd minute, sending them into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Western Oregon responded shortly after the break, finding the back of the net in the 58th minute to pull within one. In the 67th minute, Portland State's Ocean Rideout shifted the momentum back to the Vikings. Lucy Quinn set things up for the freshman, sending a long ball from midfield into the box where Rideout swiped the ball from WOU's goalkeeper to net her first career goal. With ten minutes remaining on the clock, Hoffman buried her second penalty kick of the night, securing the 4-1 win for the Vikings.
Portland State's defense excelled in the final 45 minutes of action, holding WOU to just three shots after allowing nine in the first half. PSU goalkeepers Enya Hernandez and Sidney O'billovich split time in goal for the second consecutive game. O'billovich recorded three saves after getting the start, while Hernandez finished with one.
Portland State's attack tallied eleven shots. Freshman Emma Johnston led the way with three attempts.
