The Paddock reopened under new ownership in early April, marking a revival for the south Eugene institution after a two-year closure. The restaurant is now operated by James Beard-nominated chef Crystal Platt and sommelier Kirsten Hansen, who previously ran Lion & Owl and Lemon & Olive in downtown Eugene before shifting their focus to The Paddock.
The reopening of The Paddock is significant for local residents as it restores a long-standing neighborhood gathering place that dates back to the 1940s. Hansen said, “It became this neighborhood place for Eugene to gather. And over the course of many years, it took on this home-based feeling for people that I really love.”
Platt and Hansen have introduced both familiar and new elements to the establishment at 3355 E. Amazon Drive. The redesigned space offers a mix of casual and upscale options, with menu items ranging from steak tartare to burgers. Many cocktails feature horse-themed names, reflecting the venue’s equestrian origins.
In addition to The Paddock’s reopening, other food businesses are expanding in Lane County. Cafe Agora has launched a second food truck at Sweet Salvage on Main Street in Springfield, bringing its Greek dishes closer to Springfield residents. Meanwhile, Naan Stop has joined west Eugene’s Barger Food Carts pod with Indian street snacks such as samosas and channa bhatura.
National chain Raising Cane’s also announced plans for its first Lane County locations: one at The Shoppes at Gateway in Springfield expected to open fall 2026 with a drive-thru; another near University of Oregon’s campus inside an under-construction student housing building targeting fall 2027 without a drive-thru.
Additionally, Oakway Golf Course has added 2ManCru as its new food vendor operating as a ghost kitchen offering takeout meals like chicken quesadillas and grilled cheese burgers.
These developments reflect ongoing changes within Eugene-Springfield’s dining scene as both local entrepreneurs and national chains invest in new concepts.
