Trey Swygart of the Portland Pilots was named a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, according to an announcement on Apr. 23. Swygart is one of only 15 players to be selected as a semifinalist and is the sole representative from the West Coast Conference.
The recognition highlights Swygart’s contributions both as a pitcher and hitter during this season. The award, named after former Washington State two-way standout John Olerud, honors college baseball players who excel in both pitching and hitting roles.
Swygart has played an important role for the Pilots throughout the season. On the mound, he has pitched 35.2 innings mainly in relief, maintaining a 2.52 earned run average with four wins and no losses along with 36 strikeouts. He recently delivered a shutout performance over 6.1 innings against San Francisco. At bat, he has appeared in every game so far, achieving a .269 batting average with three home runs and twenty runs batted in.
The Pilots currently hold an overall record of 22-16 and are 8-7 in conference play. Their next series will be against Santa Clara Broncos beginning Friday, Apr. 24.
The College Baseball Foundation presents several awards annually including those recognizing outstanding shortstops, pitchers, catchers, coaches, alumni, and educators within college baseball. The Foundation also oversees voting for induction into the College Baseball Hall of Fame by more than two hundred representatives nationwide comprising media members, coaches (active or retired), former players or inductees, historians and members of relevant committees such as SABR’s collegiate baseball committee.
A physical location for the College Baseball Hall of Fame is scheduled to open at Museum at Prairiefire in Overland Park in 2026.
