Two people died in a crash on Highway 34 in Linn County Saturday evening, according to Oregon State Police.

The incident highlights the dangers of driving during hazardous weather conditions and its potential consequences for motorists.

Police said a Hyundai Elantra driven westbound by Rebecca Estelle Fonseca, age 55, of Sweet Home hydroplaned and crossed into the eastbound lane. The vehicle then collided head-on with a BMW driven by Ashley Sue Fraley, age 31, of Lebanon. A passenger in the Hyundai, Kayla Marie Fonseca, age 35, also from Sweet Home, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the BMW was also pronounced dead.

Rebecca Fonseca sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that Highway 34 was affected for about four hours while investigators worked at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine all contributing factors.
